More information for prospective Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) students

The Doctor of Education degree, or Ed.D., prepares master’s-trained professionals for leadership positions in academic, research, administrative, clinical, or professional positions in educational, civil, private organizations, or public institutions. The Ed.D. is the terminal degree in the field of Education. It is recognized for appointment as a professor or lecturer in a university.

The Ed.D. may also be recognized as preparation for administrative positions in education and human development field, such as superintendent of schools, human resource director, or principal. Students entering online programs for these education professional positions should check with their state’s requirements before enrolling in an Ed.D. program that is outside of their state.

More than half of online Ed.D. programs require students to come to campus for at least 20% of required program coursework. These residency requirements allow students to work closely with faculty on the development of their research projects and dissertations. Most programs require applicants have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 (from their master’s programs) and to submit an example of research or scholarly work as part of their application process. Many online programs still have only one entry point per year, which means prospective students must plan well in advance for beginning a program.

Students who are interested in obtaining an Ed.D. may have a master’s degree in almost any field and are not required to be strictly education professionals. Majors within the Ed.D. include counseling, curriculum and instruction/ curriculum and teaching, educational administration, education policy, educational psychology, educational technology, higher education, human resource development, language/linguistics and leadership.

According to Payscale, the salary for individuals with an Ed.D. ranges from $61,565 for an Assistant Professor in Postsecondary / Higher Education to $95,130 for an Executive Director.
